“We are rich only through what we give, and poor only through what we refuse”
--Anne Sophie Swetchine

This quote inspired me to share my time with others, I want to be rich for what I can offer. As teacher and administrator of a family child care network I have been observing the tremendous increase of obesity in young children. Talking with families enrolled in the program I found out that the lack of time of parents is one of the major causes for the increase of children’s weight. Parents working long hours are not providing their children with nutritional meals, neither with physical activate that could help to avoid obesity. This is an issue that really is affecting our young children, therefore I decided to focus my research paper in obesity and how attack this issue through nutritional meals and physical activities. My goal is motivate parents to reflect on this issue that is affecting the 30% of our young children
I do believe that one challenge will be getting the parents’ cooperation to plan and promote good healthy habits in the family. Another challenge is the community authority’s involvement to provide children and families with physical activities at safety public places.
I think that will be exiting to make the presentation of my plan for parents, teachers and providers in honest way to transmit them enthusiasm and wishes to be part of this plan helping their children and helping them. I am little scared also, because I do not know how participants are going to react and participate.
I am going to encourage participants to start little by little with a daily plan and make short term plans, that later will be part of a daily routine. I am going to invite participants to work together and plan meetings or community events to share progress and create advocate groups in pro health and nutrition.

  1. I love your quote. Your inspiration on what you are trying to advocate shows in your great inspiration tha tyou currently have in mind. We all know that parents' now days work very hard and we do not have the time nor the energy to invest in going to the gym. I think that you will do great when you present your advocacy plan, and show your parents' of what they can do to have healthy habits with their children. It is only through you that some of the parents' are going to say, "I like what you had presented to us. Your enthusiasm will create a warm athmosphere." Your plan will work well, and the participants will reflect on your great effort. Good luck and keep in touch. Thanks for asking for some references regarding my advocacy plan. I am still working on it. right now i had created the format plan, but i still have to add something else, and i have to ask the speech pathologist at my center this coming Wednesday.

    1. Thanks for your comment, I already presented the workshop and I am excited because I am having my co-workers' support in creating the support group to work internally in the agency first developing a series of nutritional and educational workshops and in short time create a routine of exercise where the whole family would be participating.

  2. Hello Luz

Great post!! It seems as though fast foods and unhealthy menu planning is taking over the bodies of children and adults. Your advocacy efforts are important because they focus on finding solutions for a problem that seems to get worse each year. You might want to introduce some 1-2-3 healthy meals and simple exercises. It will allow children, who are left at home to prepare his/her own healthy meals to eat healthy and feel better.

    1. Yes Deborah the idea is to teach parents / children the importance and ease of cooking and eating healthy. Also encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables through participation in the preparation of their own meals like simple salads and healthy snacks.
